Mara Budgen is a journalist, editor and content creator specialised in sustainable development who writes in English and Italian. She's currently based in Tokyo.

About me

I’m half Italian, half British, of Malaysian descent, I speak three languages (Italian, English and Spanish) and am learning Japanese. I’ve lived in four countries (Italy, the UK, USA and Colombia) and am now in Tokyo. I love diversity in all its forms and am passionate about social issues as well as the environment – which are often undistinguishable. I’m a climber and outdoors-enthusiast as well as an avid traveller. I’m a hard worker and keen learner, outgoing and independent while also being a strong team player.

What I do

I’m an editor, journalist – member of the Italian professional order and Foreign Correspondents’ Club of Japan – and content creator with experience working in a fast-paced newsroom. My academic specialisation is in politics and development, I went to SOAS in London and the University of Cambridge, and am currently the Editor-in-Chief of the English-language website of the LifeGate media brand, the top sustainability communications company in Italy. As well as writing articles, producing videos and consulting on editorial projects on a freelance basis, as an editor I manage a team of fifteen contributors over four continents. What gets me going is creating multimedia content to give voice to the stories I care about.

Where I’m going

I want to keep exploring the world and creating content around the topics I’m passionate, while constantly acquiring news interests along the way. Currently, I’m dedicated to bringing the stories less covered from Japan – with a focus on the environment and minorities – including about the indigenous Ainu, climate change and sustainable travel. I’m also busy developing my video production skills and have taken on freelance projects creating reportages about glacial retreat in the Alps, the postponement of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, the peoples of the Lower Omo Valley in Ethiopia and XR’s International Rebellion in London, to mention a few. I’m interested in developing new collaborations in the media & communications field.
