Building a hospital in Ukraine

Having worked in disaster zones for 30 years, Shigeru Ban is all too familiar with the kind of destruction Ukraine faces. As an architect seeking to improve the conditions of those reeling from catastrophic events, he is also well-versed in the reconstruction that follows.

Cross-laminated timber has been chosen for the 25,000-square-meter surgical wing in Lviv, Ukraine … “I’m trying to convince (the Japanese government) that we need the money before the war is ended because the hospital is very urgent.” So urgent, in fact, that Lviv’s mayor may want to start building even before funding comes.
